Dr. Eric Layton, a native of Kinston, North Carolina, graduated magna cum laude from North Carolina State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. While working fulltime for a global construction firm, he earned a Masters in Business Administration from East Carolina University. Dr. Layton graduated with honors from the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and immediately entered private practice at Trident General Dentistry. Although he changed careers from engineering to dentistry, Dr. Layton is “still building bridges.”
Dr. Layton is a member of the American Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association, the Coastal District Dental Society, and multiple local dental study clubs. He regularly participates in continuing education programs so that he can offer his patients the best treatment options. Dr. Layton enjoys the outdoor activities that living in Charleston provides—sailing, boating, and fishing. He lives on James Island with his wife, daughter, son and dachshund.
Dr. Mary Katherine James, a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in biology where she played collegiate tennis. Go Hokies! She continued her education at the Medical University of South Carolina. While in school, she earned the honor of being inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), a prestigious dental honor society. Dr. James is a member of the American Dental Association, The South Carolina Dental Association and The Academy of General Dentists. Dr. James currently resides in downtown Charleston. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, running, doing yoga, and spending time with her Golden Retriever, Brody.
Dr. Spence Gibbs is from Simpsonville, SC. He graduated Valedictorian from Hillcrest High School in 2003 and went to Furman University on an academic and athletic scholarship. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Health and Exercise Science and helped lead the Paladins to a Southern Conference Baseball Championship. Dr. Gibbs graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and then served as a Captain in the United States Army. His first Army assignment was at Ft. Jackson, SC where he graduated from an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program. He then served as a General Dentist at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI for three years.
Dr. Gibbs is a dental school friend of Dr. Eric Layton and is excited to join the Trident Team. He works part time on Saturdays from 9-5. He lives in West Ashley with his fiancé Dawn and they have an awesome black lab named Sylvester.
Dr. Kristy Greenfield is originally from Richmond, VA and graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Biology. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Greenfield continued her education at the Medical University of South Carolina with a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry. She is a member of the American Dental Association, South Carolina Dental Association and Academy of General Dentists.
Dr. Greenfield has participated in over 10 dental mission trips thus far, both local and international, and is passionate about volunteering. She currently resides in West Ashley with her Golden Retriever, Dawson. In her free time, she enjoys riding horses, running, traveling and anything outdoors.
Dr. Mason Wade is a native of Charleston and attended Furman University in Greenville, SC where he graduated Cum Laude with a bachelors degree in Health Science. He went on to dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine. He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, and the South Carolina Dental Association. He likes to spend time with friends and family, water skiing, snow skiing, and being outdoors.
Dr. Robert Painter is from Greenville, SC and graduated from Riverside High School in 2006. He graduated Manga Cum Lade from Clemson University with a degree in Health Services Administration. Dr. Painter received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Painter earned the American Academy of Osseointegration award for excellence in Implant Dentistry. He is a member of the ADA, SCDA, and Academy of General Dentistry. He lives in Mt. Pleasant with his wife, Weezie (a Mt. Pleasant native), and they have a Shiba Inu dog named Maya. Dr. Painter enjoys golfing, boating, staying physically active, and spending time with his family.
Born in Hartsville, South Carolina, Dr. Clanton graduated magna cum laude from Clemson University with a BS degree in Biology and from the Medical University of South Carolina School of Dental Medicine. He is a member of the Pee Dee Dental Society, the South Carolina Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the American Orthodontic Society, and Baptist Medical Dental Mission International. He is past president of the Pee Dee Dental Society, the Pee Dee Dental Study Club and presently serves on the South Carolina Peer Review Committee and the Dental Access Days Committee.
Dr. Clanton practiced dentistry for thirty-five years in Latta, South Carolina prior to moving to Charleston in 2009 and becoming an associate at our practice in August 2010. He and his wife, Margaret Ann resides in Awendaw, and they have two daughters. Leah Clanton is an associate professor of internal medicine and hospitalist at MUSC and Meredith Bentley is a realtor with Carolina One in Mt Pleasant. The Clanton’s have twin grandsons, Aiden and Jackson Bentley.
Dr. Clanton enjoys fishing, hunting, golf and motorcycling and also does part time mission work in Central America.
Craig Atchison, DMD
Dr. Craig Atchison grew up in St. Louis, Missouri (Go Cardinals! Go Blues!). He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia and attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City for his dental training. Following dental school, Dr. Atchison spent 6 years as a general dentist before making the decision to go back to school and begin a post-graduate residency in Endodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. While currently attending MUSC, he remains in practice as a general dentist and is excited to join the Trident Team, rotating at all locations on Saturdays. Dr. Atchison lives on Johns Island with his wonderful wife Ashley, their Shirley Temple-look-alike 4 year old daughter Kinley, and their “salty dog” Boston terrier Lilly. Dr. Atchison and his family love everything Charleston has to offer – the people, the history, the beaches, and, of course, the food! They are thrilled to be here and hope to plant long-term roots.
